To set up Meshtastic: attach the antenna, flash the firmware if the board needs it, pair the radio with the Meshtastic app over Bluetooth, set your region in the LoRa settings, give the node a name, then send a message. Until you set a region, the radio does not transmit. A second node nearby is needed to see a reply.

Before you start

  1. Buy for your band. Most boards come in 868 MHz (Europe) and 915 MHz (US and others) versions. Check frequencies by country and the device finder.
  2. Attach the antenna first. The official flashing page warns: "Never power on the radio without attaching an antenna." Transmitting without one can damage the radio.
  3. Use a data cable. Some USB cables only charge. Test the cable by copying a file to another device.

Step 1: Flash the firmware

Some devices ship with Meshtastic installed, others do not. Bare ESP32 boards such as the Heltec V3 usually need flashing; follow how to flash Meshtastic. If your device already boots into the Meshtastic screen, skip to step 2.

Step 2: Install the app and pair

The official clients are the Android app, the Apple (iOS) app and the web client at client.meshtastic.org. Android supports serial, Bluetooth and network connections; the web client supports serial, Bluetooth and network too.

Open the app, scan for devices and pick your radio. Pairing asks for a PIN. The Bluetooth docs say the default depends on the hardware: with a screen the radio shows a random PIN on the display; without a screen it uses a fixed PIN, 123456 unless you changed it. The docs strongly recommend changing the default fixed PIN.

On ESP32 boards, Bluetooth is switched off when Wi-Fi is enabled.

Step 3: Set your region first

This is the step people miss. The Meshtastic docs say you must set your region to communicate over the mesh. On Android, tap "Set your region" on the device card, or go to Settings > LoRa, pick the region and send. On Apple, use Settings > Radio Configuration > LoRa.

Pick the region that matches your country, such as US, EU_868 or ANZ. The region sets frequency range and power limit, but the listed limit is the firmware ceiling, not your national limit. Details in frequency by country.

Step 4: Name the node and check the channel

Give the node a short name so others recognise you. Leave the primary channel on defaults to join a typical public mesh: the default preset is LONG_FAST (see presets). Everyone you want to talk to must use the same preset and channel settings. The default channel key is published, so treat it as public. For private groups, see channels and encryption.

Step 5: Send a test message

Send a message to the primary channel. With only one node, you will see no reply, so test with a second radio a few metres apart first, then move apart. Messages show delivery status in the app.

Leave the role on CLIENT (the default) for a personal node. See roles explained before changing it.

Common first errors

Your first week

Set the region, keep CLIENT and the default preset, and test with two radios before you mount anything outside. Add an antenna upgrade or a higher position later, after you know it works.

Questions people ask

What is the default Bluetooth PIN for Meshtastic?

With a screen, the radio shows a random PIN. Without a screen it uses the fixed PIN 123456 unless you changed it, according to the Meshtastic Bluetooth docs.

Can I use Meshtastic without a phone?

Yes. Devices with a screen and keyboard can send messages on their own, and radios relay messages without a phone. A phone is the easy way to type and configure.

Why can't my two Meshtastic devices see each other?

Usually the region or modem preset differs, or one radio has no region set. Check both in the LoRa settings.

Do I need to power on with the antenna attached?

Yes. The Meshtastic flashing page says never to power on the radio without an antenna.
