How the finder ranks devices
It works in two steps, and both are simple enough to check by hand.
- Filters. A device is dropped if it lacks a must-have you ticked, if no version exists for your frequency band, or if its listed price is above your budget. Prices in other currencies are converted with the European Central Bank reference rate of the day the data was updated.
- Score. The remaining devices get points for matching the use you picked. For a pocket node, an nRF52 chip (long battery life), an included battery and a case score highest. For a solar repeater, low power draw counts three times. For texting without a phone, a physical keyboard counts three times. Cheaper devices get a small bonus.
The data behind it is the same table you see on the device list, and each device has its sources there. The finder never ranks by commission: shops do not pay to be listed.
Quick answers if you don't want to click
- First node, under $30: a bare Heltec V3 or V4 board, about $17.9 (Heltec store, Nov 5, 2026) for the V3. Add a battery and a case later. See Heltec V3 vs V4.
- Pocket node that lasts days: a nRF52 device with a battery and case, such as the Seeed SenseCAP T1000-E at $39.9 (Seeed Studio official store, Nov 5, 2026).
- Texting without a phone: a keyboard device like the LilyGO T-Deck Plus at $77.16 (LilyGO official store, Nov 5, 2026). More in devices with a keyboard.
- Rooftop or solar repeater: a low-power board in a weatherproof box with an SMA antenna. See the best solar nodes.
What the finder can't know
It does not know your terrain. Range depends far more on antenna height and line of sight than on the device. Check the range calculator before you buy a bigger antenna, and the frequency guide before you pick a band.
Questions people ask
Is a more expensive Meshtastic device better?
Not for range. Most devices use the same Semtech SX1262 radio chip, so a $20 board and a $90 handheld hear about equally well with the same antenna. Paying more buys a battery, a case, GPS, a screen, a keyboard or longer battery life.
Should I buy 868 MHz or 915 MHz?
It depends on your country, not on preference. Europe uses 868 MHz (region EU_868), the Americas and Australia use 915 MHz (US, ANZ). A radio built for the wrong band works poorly and may be illegal to use. See frequencies by country.
Do I need two devices to try Meshtastic?
To test messaging yourself, yes: one node can only talk to other nodes. In many cities there are already public nodes on the default channel, so one device may be enough to join an existing mesh. Check a public node map for your area first.
