For most people the Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4 is the best cheap way in, the Elecrow ThinkNode M1 is the best complete pocket node, and the M5Stack Cardputer Mesh Kit is the cheapest listed device with a real keyboard. For a rooftop or solar repeater, pick an nRF52 node in a sealed case such as the RAK WisMesh Repeater Mini.

Almost every device here uses the same Semtech SX1262 radio family, so range depends far more on antenna and location than on the brand (see how far Meshtastic really reaches). What you pay for is the rest: battery, case, GPS, screen, keyboard and how long a charge lasts. Pick the job first, then the device.

Best budget board: Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V4

The V4 lists up to 28 dBm transmit power on the high-power version (a 22 dBm variant also exists), an ESP32-S3 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and interfaces for solar input and an external GNSS module. The listed starting price is $17.9 (Heltec store, Nov 5, 2026) at the Heltec store; the exact price depends on options such as PSRAM and display.

The catch is that it is a bare board. There is no battery, no case and no GPS (Heltec sells an L76K module separately). The ESP32-S3 also draws more power than an nRF52 chip, so it suits a USB-powered desk or window node better than a pocket node. Heltec also sells a V4-R8 with a different pinout, so do not flash V4 firmware onto it. If you are comparing the older board, see Heltec V3 vs V4.

Pick it if you want a low entry price with a screen and are happy to add a battery and a case yourself.

Best complete pocket node: Elecrow ThinkNode M1

The ThinkNode M1 ships as a finished device: nRF52840 chip, 1.54" e-paper screen, GNSS, a 1200 mAh battery, an ABS case and a belt clip. The maker lists a sleep current of about 5.6 uA, 22 dBm transmit power and an 81 g weight. The listed "as low as" price is $53.9 (Elecrow (listed 'as low as' price), Nov 5, 2026), and some resellers charge more.

Because it uses an nRF52 chip and an e-paper screen, it is built for days of standby rather than hours. The limits are that it has no IP rating and that the antenna connector is listed as SMA while the maker's page also mentions RP-SMA, so check the connector before you buy a replacement antenna. The two are not interchangeable, a point the Meshtastic docs glossary also makes.

Best power-bank style node: Heltec MeshPocket

The MeshPocket puts an nRF52840 node inside a 5000 mAh power bank with Qi2 magnetic charging and a 2.13" e-ink screen. The 5000 mAh version weighs 140 g and is listed at $49 (Heltec store, Nov 5, 2026); a 10000 mAh version costs more.

The catch is the lack of GPS, as far as the maker's page shows, and no waterproofing at all. It is a good bag or desk companion that also charges your phone, not an outdoor tracker.

Best tracker: Seeed SenseCAP T1000-E

The T1000-E is a credit-card-sized nRF52840 tracker with GNSS, a 700 mAh battery and an IP65 rating. See the full comparison in the best GPS trackers.

The trade-off is the connection side: it has an internal antenna only, no USB port (it charges through a magnetic cable) and an LR1110 radio chip. The Meshtastic docs note that the LR1110 cannot receive packets from older SX127x radios. Seeed lists it at $39.9 (Seeed Studio official store, Nov 5, 2026).

Best keyboard messenger: M5Stack Cardputer Mesh Kit

This kit pairs a Cardputer-Adv with a LoRa and GNSS cap: a 56-key keyboard, a 1.14" screen, a built-in 1750 mAh battery, an SMA antenna connector and 22 dBm transmit power, listed at $48 (M5Stack store listing, Nov 5, 2026) from the M5Stack store. The screen is small and the ESP32-S3 is not frugal with power.

For a larger screen, the LilyGO T-Deck Plus has a 2.8" touchscreen, keyboard, GPS and a 2000 mAh battery, listed at $77.16 (LilyGO official store, Nov 5, 2026) at the LilyGO store. See all keyboard devices.

Best solar repeater: RAK WisMesh Repeater Mini

This is a ready-made solar node: nRF52840 (RAK4631), integrated solar panel, 3200 mAh battery, SMA connector and an IP67 enclosure with wall or pole mounting. It has no screen and no GPS listed. RAK lists it at $99 (RAK official store, Nov 5, 2026), out of stock at the last check. Seeed's SenseCAP Solar Node P1 is the main alternative, covered with DIY options in the best solar nodes.

Best base station: B&Q Station G3

The Station G3 is an ESP32-S3 base with an SMA connector, a 1.3" OLED and a listed transmit power of 35 dBm in our data. It is listed at $139 (BQ Voyage store (sale price, was $159), Nov 5, 2026) (a sale price at the B&Q store). It ships without battery or case, so it belongs on a mast, in an attic or on a shelf with mains power. Remember that legal limits apply to radiated power, not to the board output: a high-power board plus a high-gain antenna can exceed them. See is Meshtastic legal before you pair the two.

How we picked

We compared devices on data only: chip family (nRF52 for battery life, ESP32 for Wi-Fi), whether a battery, case and GPS are included, the antenna connector (a bigger antenna needs an SMA-type port), the weatherproof rating the maker states and the listed price with its date. We did not run field tests, and we do not claim range differences between devices. Details are on the methodology page, and you can filter the whole database in the device finder.

Bottom line

Pick the V4 if you want a cheap start and will add a battery. Pick the ThinkNode M1 for a complete pocket node that lasts days. Pick the Cardputer kit to type without a phone. Pick the RAK Repeater Mini or a similar sealed nRF52 node for a roof. Choose the frequency band for your country first: see frequencies by country.

Questions people ask

What is the best Meshtastic device overall?

There is no single best. For a first node the Heltec V4 is the cheap pick, for a finished pocket node the ThinkNode M1 is the most complete in our data, and for outdoors a sealed nRF52 node wins on battery life.

Do I need GPS?

Only if you want your position on the map or a tracker. Some devices, such as the Heltec V4, need a separate module; others, such as the T1000-E and ThinkNode M1, include it.

Which chip lasts longer on battery, ESP32 or nRF52?

The nRF52840 devices draw far less in sleep, for example Heltec lists about 11 uA deep sleep for the T114. See ESP32 vs nRF52.

Is a more expensive device better?

Not for range. The radio chip is mostly the same; extra money buys battery, case, GPS, screen or a keyboard.

Which Meshtastic device is the best in 2026?

It depends on the job. In our data the Heltec V4 is the cheap pick, the ThinkNode M1 the finished pocket node, the Cardputer Mesh Kit the cheapest with a real keyboard, and a sealed nRF52 node such as the RAK WisMesh Repeater Mini the solar repeater.
