Buying Meshtastic gear on AliExpress: how to buy devices

Buying Meshtastic gear on AliExpress can be the cheapest route to LoRa boards. It is also where wrong-band and no-antenna orders happen. This is the checklist.

Buy from the maker's own AliExpress store, reached through the maker's website, and choose the frequency option before you pay: 868 MHz for Europe, 915 MHz for the US. Check whether the antenna is in the listing, and add import costs: since 1 July 2026 the EU charges a EUR 3 customs duty per item on low-value parcels, and the US ended its de minimis exemption on 29 August 2025.

Heltec and LilyGO both state that they run official AliExpress stores. This page links to no store directly, because store addresses change and listings on the platform can be copied. The safe route is to start on the maker's site (Heltec, LILYGO) and follow its buy links, so you land on the store the maker itself points to.

Step 1: find the real store

Many AliExpress sellers list the same boards under similar names. Before you order:

Step 2: choose the 868 or 915 MHz option

Many LoRa boards come in several band versions. Heltec's listing for the WiFi LoRa 32 V3, for example, offers 433, 470-510, 863-870 and 902-928 MHz options, and its price varies by option. Europe uses 868 MHz and the US 915 MHz, so the default option in a listing may be the wrong one for you. A radio built for the wrong band works poorly and may be illegal to use, as covered in frequencies by country.

Also read the variant name. Heltec sells a V4 and a V4-R8 with a different pinout, and V4 firmware must not be flashed onto the R8. Write down the exact board name and variant from the order page, because the web flasher asks for it (see the setup guide).

Step 3: is the antenna included?

Heltec's Mesh Node T096 package lists an antenna, a battery connector and pin headers, while the V3 and V4 pages describe bare boards with no battery or case. Marketplace options can sell the board alone, or bundle an antenna or a case, at different prices. Read the "package includes" text and choose the option with an antenna that matches your band.

Never power on a LoRa board with no antenna attached. For upgrades and connector types (SMA, RP-SMA, IPEX/U.FL), see the best antennas.

Step 4: spotting clones and fakes

There is no tested list of fake boards, so use checks you can verify yourself:

  1. The chip: compare the listing's chip (ESP32-S3 and SX1262 for the Heltec V3, for instance) with the maker's spec page.
  2. The board name printed on the PCB, and the one the web flasher shows after connecting.
  3. Reviews that mention the same band and variant you want.
  4. The return policy and the buyer-protection period before you order.

If the board identifies as something different in the flasher, ask for a refund through the platform.

Step 5: EU VAT and customs duty in 2026

Three costs can sit on top of the listing price in the EU:

Rules differ by country, so check your customs authority for the details that apply to you.

Step 6: US de minimis changes

The White House order suspending de minimis treatment for all countries took effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on 29 August 2025. The exemption no longer applies to shipments regardless of value or country of origin, and non-postal shipments are subject to all applicable duties, taxes and fees. For postal shipments the order allowed either an ad valorem duty equal to the country's effective tariff rate or a flat per-package duty of $80, $160 or $200 depending on the rate, with the flat option available for six months from the effective date. Tariff rates have changed since the order, and the current rate for your parcel may differ, so treat the listing price as before duty.

When AliExpress is not worth it

If you need the device quickly, want warranty handled in your country or are buying a single cheap board, a local retailer or the maker's own store may cost about the same after import charges. Compare before you order, starting from the best-of list. Beginners should favour devices with battery and case included, covered in best for beginners.

Bottom line

Start on the maker's website and follow its AliExpress link. Select the right band, confirm the antenna, add import costs, then compare with a local seller before paying.

Questions people ask

Is the Heltec V3 on AliExpress the same as the Heltec store?

It should be if you buy from the maker's own AliExpress store. Confirm the store through the maker's site.

Which frequency do I choose on AliExpress?

868 MHz in Europe, 915 MHz in the US. Pick it on the listing; do not rely on the default option.

Do I pay VAT on AliExpress in the EU?

VAT applies to imports, with no low-value exemption since 2021 according to Wikipedia. Whether AliExpress collects it at checkout depends on the order, so check the checkout total.

Is there a customs duty in the EU now?

According to the European Commission, a temporary EUR 3 duty per item on low-value parcels applies from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2028.
